GMG Racing Heads to Road America for ALMS Weekend

Motorsport News

GMG’s next race in the ALMS series takes place at a track in Wisconsin that GMG Principle James Sofronas and GMG Race client Alex Welch both thoroughly enjoy. James’ last World Challenge race at Road America in 2009 saw him on the pole in another Porsche, and Alex just ran one of his other Porsches in a Vintage race 2 weeks ago there with great success.

“I am certainly looking forward to this weekend. Anytime you can race at Road America, it’s a great opportunity. I don’t know any hardcore racer who doesn’t just love this track. Last year we were looking strong and qualified 3rd but had a gearbox issue early in the race which put us out. This year we have a new car. We are running Alex’s 2011 Cup and we prepped it for GTC since his last race at Lime Rock in the IMSA Challenge Series,” said James.

Alex is equally looking forward to Road America as it’s one of his favorite tracks. So much so that he decided to skip the IMSA Challenge race, which he was originally slated to run, and committed to running the 4 hour enduro with James right after his first ALMS race at Lime Rock.

Alex added,”Lime Rock was a lot of fun and I enjoyed driving with James. He has a lot of experience and I learned a lot from their Data Acquisition program. It is very detailed and with James sharing my car, we got instant feedback which helped me get up to speed quickly. Now we are heading to a track that I have run on before and feel very comfortable with, so I am very excited about our prospects.

James commented, “Brent Holden had to unexpectedly miss this round so the entire GMG team will be focused on this run. The GTC class is very competitive with some of the best Porsche drivers in the country. We will have to work extra hard to achieve great results, but I know the team is up to it.

Saturday’s four-hour Time Warner Cable Road Race Showcase will put the world’s best sports car drivers, teams and manufacturers to the ultimate test. The track features dramatic elevation changes, slow- and high-speed corners and some of the fastest straight-line speeds the ALMS will see this season.
