Rumors are circling the web claiming that Porsche is working on a new turbocharged flat-four engine to serve as the brand’s entry-level sports car powerplant. According to our friends at Flat6news.com, the new engine is expected to debut within the next year —and perhaps as soon as the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

While details about the new powerplant are only speculation right now, the new engine is expected to be based on the current 3.8-liter flat-six engine of the 911 Carrera S, with two less cylinders. Fitted with Porsche’s Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), VarioCam Plus and a single turbocharger, the 2.5-liter flat-four could develop upwards of 350 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque.

Turbocharging is an extremely efficient way to obtain more power while saving fuel. Porsche has recently announced that the new Panamera S will no longer feature a big V-8 lump, but instead a smaller displacement twin-turbocharged V-6.

The new turbocharged 2.5-liter engine will eventually find its home in the Boxster and Cayman.
