1971 Porsche 917/10 Spyder Can-Am Racing Car

A group of 12 historic racers and road cars will be auctioned off by RM at its Monterey sale in August during Pebble Beach Concours week.

Coinciding with the famed Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, RM Auctions will be offering for auction a group of historic Porsche race and road cars. If you remember, sales records were recently broken at the Gooding&Company Ameila Island Auction back in March. That auction featured cars from the Drendel Collection. The one that generated the most buzz, coincidentally, brought in the most cash; the Penske Mark Donohue 917-30 Can Am Spyder at 4.4 million dollars. There was also a car which brought 2.5 million dollars; the 76 Doppel Weltmeister Martini 935. Both of these cars dramatically exceeded their pre-auction estimates.

The highlight of the RM Auction in August, will surely be the 1971 Porsche 917/10 Spyder Can-Am racing car. Collectors consider the 917 to be the most desirable Porsche race car ever built, commanding the very top prices in all market conditions for the past 20 years. The reason is readily apparent, as the 917 was the last step in a progression of the new era of Porsche racing cars that began with the 906 in 1966. The three-liter engined 908 won the World Championship in 1969, but Porsche feared it would never have enough horsepower to win overall honors at Le Mans. This car has a bid estimate of $2,900,000-$3,500,000 US and if the results from the Drendel auction is any indication, this car will most likely head north of the high side.

1987 Porsche 962 IMSA Camel GT Racing Car

In addition to the 917/10, A 1987 Porsche 962 IMSA Camel GT Racing Car will hit the block with a Bid estimate of $1,200,000-$1,600,000 US.  For three years, from 1985 through 1987, the Porsche 962 dominated sports car racing in North America, winning three GTP Manufacturer’s Championships in a row.

1981 Porsche 935 JLP-3 IMSA Racing Car

The 1981 Porsche 935 JLP-3 IMSA Racing Car, which is powered by a 750+ horsepower, 3.2-liter twin turbocharged flat six-cylinder engine, will hit the block with a bid estimate of  $1,300,000-$1,800,000 US. This car was the only car to win both the Daytona 24 Hours and the Sebring 12 Hours in the same year.

Another truly special car that will be auctioned is this 1963 Porsche 904/6 Carrera GTS,  It’s one of five surviving six-cylinder Works Team 904s and is one of the few 904/6’s that still retains the 906 six-cylinder engine with which it was sold to its first owner. Chassis 906-002, is unquestionably one of the finest examples in existence. This stunning Porsche has a bid estimate of $1,800,000-$2,200,000 US.
