They say imitation is the most sincere form of flattery – and Porsche is on a roll. First the introduction of a successful SUV, then super sedans, RS versions and now hybrid models. Why not copy a great corporate model? Well according to EVO, Bentley’s new CEO Wolfgang Durheimer, the former Porsche R&D chief who took control of both Bentley and Bugatti six months ago, told a group of journalists of his determination to transform the company. This transformation will include a dramatic increase in both its model range and its sales volumes. Sound familiar?
Durheimer has confirmed that work is progressing on a range of major innovations for the brand, set to include a new SUV model, diesel and hybrid powertrains, and most interestingly – a dramatically lightened version of the Continental Supersport – an “RS” Version.
Bentley’s SUV will be a big part of this expansion. According to EVO, this will be developed around shared architecture with Volkswagen – which both the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7 share. Durheimer described the SUV as having Bentley’s‘uniquely British design and craftsmanship. He confirmed that the proposed new model will be more expensive than the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, meaning it will likely be the world’s most expensive SUV.
Durheimer’s experience at Porsche will also lead to the development of several new performance variants of existing models. According to the report, he’s already signed off on the development of a dramatically lightened prototype version of the Continental Supersports coupe which will shed nearly 1100lbs through the use of advanced composites.
Durheimer also confirmed plans to take Bentley back into racing, although he indicated this wouldn’t be a return to Le Mans for as long as Audi and Porsche are competing there. We’ll just have to wait and see.
